A passenger in a stolen pickup truck that crashed and killed two Saskatoon teenagers this summer was sentenced to three years Thursday.

The 18-year-old woman — who was 17 at the time of the crash and cannot be named — pleaded guilty in Saskatoon provincial court last month to two counts of being party to evading police causing death, one count of being party to evading police causing bodily harm, one count of occupying a vehicle knowing it was stolen, and one count of breach of undertaking.

She was given the maximum three-year sentence. With time already served, she will spend eight more months in custody before spending four months under community supervision. She will serve her final year on probation.

She was a passenger in the stolen truck May 5 when the truck sped through the intersection of Saskatoon’s 22nd Street West and Avenue M before crashing into two other vehicles. One of the vehicles, a car, was pushed on its side and into the wall of a medical clinic. Two 17-year-old students from Bethlehem Catholic High School, James Paul Haughey and Sarah Wensley, died in the collision. Another teen was injured.

The driver of the stolen truck, 21-year-old Cheyann Chrystal Peeteetuce, pleaded guilty last month to two counts of criminal negligence causing death, one count of criminal negligence causing bodily harm, possession of a stolen vehicle, impaired driving, evading police and breach of probation.

Peeteetuce’s sentencing is scheduled for March 11.
