Five inmates are facing charges after a riot at the Saskatoon Provincial Correctional Centre.

Saskatoon police were called to a disturbance at the jail around 11:30 p.m. Sunday, but corrections staff were able to deal with the incident without police officers.

Police said in a media release Wednesday that five men, between 18 and 34 years old, have since been charged with participating in a riot and interfering with the lawful operation of the correctional centre.

The incident was the third time police had been called to the jail over the last few weeks.

Officers were also called to the jail just after 11 p.m. on Tuesday, July 21.

A spokesperson with the Ministry of Justice said an incident happened at a dorm that houses 30 low-risk offenders.

Corrections staff were able to control the situation using pepper spray, he said. Police set up a perimeter outside the jail but were not called into the facility.

No one was injured, according to the spokesperson.

Six men between 18 and 31 years old were charged with mischief over $5,000 and escaping custody in relation to that incident. They were arrested shortly after police were called to the jail.

An internal review of that incident is expected to take place.

On July 19, two inmates who escaped by scaling a fence were arrested.
