Six inmates are facing charges after attempting to escape a Saskatoon jail during an altercation Tuesday night.

Police were called to a disturbance at the Saskatoon Correctional Centre shortly after 11 p.m.

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Corrections and Policing said an incident occurred in a dorm unit that houses 30 low-risk offenders.

Corrections staff were able to control the situation using pepper spray, he said. Police set up a perimeter outside the jail but were not called into the facility.

No one was injured, according to the spokesperson.

Police said Thursday that six men, between 18 and 31 years old, have since been charged with mischief over $5,000 and escaping custody. They were arrested a few hours after police were called to the jail.

The ministry’s spokesperson said Wednesday that eight inmates were being moved to Regina and seven were being moved to Prince Albert following the altercation. Fifteen offenders were staying in Saskatoon.

An internal review of the incident is underway, he said.
