An external investigation has been called following the death of a 39-year-old woman in a northeastern Saskatchewan RCMP cell.
The woman became unresponsive in a Sandy Bay RCMP cell just before 8 p.m. Monday, Mounties said in a media release. Officials from the Sandy Bay Health Centre provided medical assistance but she was pronounced dead on scene.
Saskatoon Police Service has since been called to conduct an independent investigation into the death. RCMP requested the external investigation.
Investigators from Saskatoon will report their findings to the Ministry of Justice and the attorney general.
Mounties also requested the Ministry of Justice appoint an independent observer.
The woman was from Sandy Bay. Her name has yet to be released.
Sandy Bay is located in northeastern Saskatchewan about 190 kilometres northeast of La Ronge.
