A school division split across the Saskatchewan-Alberta boundary but governed solely by Saskatchewan is looking at leaving the province.

Lloydminster Public School Division is eyeing defecting to Alberta amid discussions of Saskatchewan amalgamating its school boards.

The division has schools in both provinces and receives funding from both governments, but Saskatchewan is the governing body.

Officials with the Lloydminster board say the school division may pursue moving under control of the Alberta government if changes in Saskatchewan jeopardize the division’s delivery of services.

The Saskatchewan government is currently reviewing its education governance system. One option under the government’s review is to amalgamate all 18 public school boards in the province into one board.

Education Minister Don Morgan has appointed a panel to consult with education stakeholders. They’re set to present their findings next month.

Lloydminster Public School Division officials say they hope to remain within the framework of the existing model. A potential move to Alberta is one of three options the division is eyeing and was proposed after consultations with parents and stakeholders.
