A veteran Saskatoon police officer is facing impaired driving charges.

Const. Trenton Dament, 45, was arrested and charged with impaired driving and exceeding .08 after a single-vehicle crash early in the morning Dec. 16, Saskatoon police said in a media release. He allegedly crashed a car into a curb at Eighth Street and Boychuck Drive while he was off-duty.

Police were notified of the collision by automatic roadside assistance. Responding officers conducted roadside tests before using a breathalyzer, according to police.

“It’s very disappointing. As a police service we’ve worked very hard to reduce or eliminate impaired driving. Our officers are human,” police Chief Clive Weighill said Monday.

“Our officers are human. He will be dealt with through the criminal justice system, as anyone else would, and there will be a (Saskatchewan) Police Act administrative review after that.”

Dament, who's been an officer with Saskatoon police for 12 years, has since been reassigned to administrative duties, pending the outcome of court proceedings.
