The University of Saskatchewan has been hit by a lot of bad news this year, and Friday afternoon they were dealt another blow.

The College of Medicine received a courtesy call from the Committee on the Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools informing them that after discussions with the Liaison Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools, the Undergraduate Medical Education Program will be put back on probation.

The college has been on warning of probation since July 2011.

“Over the last year it has become abundantly clear to us that the problems we face in the college are structural, not a result of insufficient funding,” said University of Saskatchewan President Busch-Vishniac in a press release. “The College of Medicine was founded 60 years ago on a model that simply does not work for our medical school today.”

Busch-Vishniac said restructuring the college is a top priority for the university.

Despite the probation, the college is still fully accredited.

The call was a courtesy warning, and the school expects to receive official notice by letter in a few weeks.
