An early morning roundup cleared a Saskatchewan highway after a semi transporting cattle rolled over.

Several animals died and others were running loose after the truck rolled on Highway 2, about five kilometres south of the junction of Highway 11 near Chamberlain, just before midnight Wednesday, RCMP said in a news release.

Officers from three RCMP detachments and firefighters from several communities were on the scene early Thursday as the cattle were rounded up for transport.

The highway was cleared of cattle just after 6 a.m., with the semi and trailer expected to be removed later in the day.

RCMP reported heavy rain, high winds and lightning in the area but said it was unknown if those were contributing factors in the crash.
