A Saskatoon wildlife expert is concerned a downtown development will be a hazard to birds.
Jan Shadick, the executive director of Living Sky Wildlife Rehabilitation, says the design of River Landing’s Parcel Y building developments is not bird-friendly.
The exteriors of the development are expected to be glass. Shadick says the city will see more birds colliding with the glass and injuring themselves because of the design.
“The more glass there is on a building, the more likely that it is for bird strikes,” she says. “When birds hit windows, they’re flying into what they think are habitat. They see reflections or clouds or trees, so they think that’s what they’re flying into.”
Shadick raised the issue at a Meewasin Valley Authority board meeting Friday.
