Saskatoon city council has approved a 13-acre plot of undeveloped land be set aside for a possible solar power plant.

Saskatoon Light and Power requested the land be set aside for the proposed plant at a meeting with the Standing Policy Committee on Environment, Utilities and Corporate Services earlier this month.

Council approved the request, which reserves the land and gives Saskatoon Light and Power the green light to proceed with community engagement and consultations, on Monday. The proposed plant will still need approval from city council before being built.

City council also approved that Saskatoon Regional Economic Development Authority evaluate economic benefits of the proposed plant.

According to Saskatoon Light and Power, the proposed plant would cost roughly $3.5 million and include 3,000 panels, which would generate enough energy to power between 120 to 125 homes.

The plot of land is located south of 11th Street West between Circle Drive South and the CN rail lines.

City council will decide if the plant moves forward at a later date.
