Alvin Buckwold was not criminally responsible in the death of his father, a judge ruled Thursday.
Ian Buckwold was found dead July 14, 2013 at his family cabin in Emma Lake, north of Prince Albert. His son, Alvin, now 32, was arrested on scene and charged with second-degree murder.
Alvin, who friends of the family said battles schizophrenia, underwent a psychiatric assessment following the death and it was determined he was fit to stand trial. A trial was scheduled but a judge ruled at Prince Albert Court of Queen’s Bench Thursday that Alvin was not criminally responsible in the death.
Alvin, instead, will be remanded to Saskatchewan Hospital — a mental health hospital — in North Battleford and his case will be directed to the Saskatchewan Review Board.
He has been at the hospital since his arrest.
Ian Buckwold, who was 64 when he died, was a prominent Saskatoon lawyer and mental health advocate. He and his wife were instrumental in a campaign to build the Irene and Leslie Dube Mental Health Centre in Saskatoon.
