Alvin Buckwold has been ordered to undergo a psychiatric assessment to determine if he’s fit to stand trial.

Buckwold is charged with second degree murder in the death of his father, prominent Saskatoon lawyer, Ian Buckwold. The accused made his second appearance in a Prince Albert court Tuesday morning, where the judge ordered a 30 day assessment at the Saskatchewan Hospital in North Battleford.

The assessment will review Buckwold’s mental state and experts will determine if he’s criminally responsible for the death of his father.

Friends of the family said Alvin Buckwold has battled schizophrenia for several years, and colleagues of Ian Buckwold said his son’s illness motivated him and his wife to become advocates for the mentally ill. The family was instrumental in a campaign to build the Irene and Leslie Dube Mental Health Centre in Saskatoon.

Alvin Buckwold was also ordered to undergo a toxicology screening. He’s been remanded until his next court appearance in Prince Albert on August 20, where the results of his assessments will be considered.
