A prominent Saskatoon lawyer who died earlier this year has been honoured with a posthumous award for his volunteer and advocacy work.

Ian Buckwold was remembered with the Saskatoon B'nai Brith’s We're Proud of You award in recognition of his work for those struggling with mental illness and his contributions to the Saskatoon community.

His brother, Bruce, accepted the honor on behalf of the family during a ceremony Wednesday night.

Buckwold and his wife Mary Elllen chaired The Future in Mind campaign that raised funds to build the Irene and Leslie Dube Centre for Mental Health. The couple had personal connection with mental illness after their son, Alvin, was diagnosed with schizophrenia more than a decade ago.

Alvin Buckwold, 31, has been charged with second-degree murder in the death of his father who was killed July 14 at his Emma Lake cottage.
