There was lots of excitement in Porcupine Plain Tuesday as the TSN Kraft Celebration Tour rolled into town.
TSN broadcast live from a parking lot in the town of 900 people, and for veteran sports anchor Darren Dutchyshen, it was a trip back home.
“It is my hometown, so to be able to see this, it’s phenomenal,” says Dutchyshen.
Dutchyshen and co-anchor Kate Bierness brought an entire crew to town for the star studded event and spent the last few days taking in the sights and meeting the folks.
In addition to the excitement of the TSN live show, Porcupine Plane will also receive $25,000 from Kraft Canada to upgrade the 45-year-old Chase Place arena.
Renovations to the rink will mean a lot to the entire community. As with many small towns in, Saskatchewan, the arena is the hub of activity here.
“It’s been unbelieveable,” says Bierness. “It’s Dutch’s hometown, but they’ve treated me and the crew so well that it’s just been fantastic. I love this province and I love this town.”
While Dutchyshen is glad his hometown is getting it's time in the spotlight, he's quick to point out the community won the contest on their own.
“When you’re from a small town, no one is going to do it for you; you have to do it yourself. This is their community initiative, and bravo. I’m just along for the ride.”
