A pilot project launched Monday in Saskatoon is aimed at making school zones safer.

Flashing lights have been installed on school zone signs on Clarence Avenue between Third Street and Fifth Street as a way to alert motorists to reduce speed and improve safety for pedestrians.

"The pilot project is going to last two weeks, so we've taken some traffic counts before to determine what the average speeds are,” said Angela Gardiner, the city’s director of transportation.

“We're going to be taking counts during the program to determine if it does help in reducing the speeds in school zones, and if it is effective we will be expanding to other locations this fall."

The lights will flash weekdays between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. until the end of June.
