Tony and Kimberlee Berg’s Valentine’s Day plans are set.
The Saskatoon couple will be enjoying dinner at The Cave, at the exact same table where Tony asked Kimberlee to marry him 18 years ago.
“I (thought) he had something in mind when we were coming here, but it was a surprise to me, and it was a welcome surprise,” Kimberlee recalled.
The two got engaged in January 1999 and were married one month later, on Feb. 14. They’re just one of many couple’s who’ve got engaged at The Cave.
The unique Saskatoon restaurant — which, fittingly, is designed to resemble a cave — has seen its fair share of marriage proposals.
Manager George Kosmas says well over 100 people have popped the question in the restaurant’s 43-year history.
It’s not unusual to see anywhere from a single proposal, all the way up to four or five on Valentine’s Day, he says. He’s even heard of different generations of the same family getting engaged at The Cave.
“Mom and dad got engaged here. Grandma and grandpa got engaged here,” he said.
“It’s just one of the things about being around Saskatoon for 43 years, so I take great pride in that as a restaurant and as a local Saskatoon person — just building on to that tradition.”
Tony remembers his proposal.
“Basically I gave her two options,” he said. He asked Kimberlee if she wanted to spend Valentine’s Day weekend with him at the Fantasy Land Hotel in Edmonton, or if she wanted to go to Vegas and get married.
“I said, ‘If we go to Las Vegas, chances are we’re going to come back married.’”
And that’s exactly what happened.
