Heroic Henry, a pitbull that suffered severe injuries after being dragged behind a minivan, has a long and intensive recovery ahead, says the Saskatoon SPCA.

The dog was rushed by animal control officers to a veterinary clinic Sunday evening after witnesses reported to police seeing the pitbull being dragged by a minivan travelling westbound near Lenore Drive and Silverwood Road.

Witnesses tried to stop the van, but the motorist continued driving. Henry, who is between three and five years old, was only freed after the leash broke.

He is currently under the care of the Western College of Veterinary Medicine.

The Saskatoon SPCA, which needed less than 24 hours to raise $10,000 for his care, describes his condition as critical. He’s suffering severe post-traumatic stress and will need reconstructive surgery.

His medical and rehabilitation bills will cost between $5,000 and $10,000, the animal shelter says. Their fundraising effort, which was launched Wednesday night, reached its $10,000 goal just before noon Thursday.

Any additional money raised will go towards other animals like Henry.

Police are still searching for the driver of the minivan, which is described as dark in colour.

Investigators believe there were two people — a white male and a white female — in the vehicle.

The van was last seen travelling northbound on Wanuskewin Road. The leash was still attached to the van’s rear trailer hitch.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call police at 306-975-8300 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
