A badly injured pitbull is in the care of a veterinary clinic and police are searching for the driver of a minivan after the dog was dragged along a Saskatoon street over the weekend.
Police were called Sunday evening after witnesses reported seeing the dog, on its leash, being dragged by a minivan travelling westbound near Lenore Drive and Silverwood Road.
Witnesses tried to stop the van but the motorist continued driving. The dog was only freed after the leash broke.
Police rushed the dog, which they described as badly injured, to a veterinary clinic. The pitbull’s condition has since improved but he is expected to have a long recovery, police said in a media release Wednesday.
Investigators believe there were two people — a white male and a white female — in the van. The minivan is described as dark in colour and was last seen travelling northbound on Wanuskewin Road. The leash was still attached to the van’s rear trailer hitch.
The dog is a large male pitbull, grey and beige in colour, between three and five years old. The Saskatoon SPCA is funding the dog’s care, according to police.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call police at 306-975-8300 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
