An inquest will be held into the death of a man in RCMP custody in northern Saskatchewan.

Desmond Roberts was found unresponsive in his cell at the La Ronge RCMP detachment just after midnight on May 31, 2015.

Roberts, 43, was taken to a nearby hospital and was later transferred to Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon, where he died.

Coroner Alma Wiebe of Saskatoon will preside at the inquest, which will be held April 3-7 at the La Ronge courthouse.

Inquests are held whenever someone dies while in police custody. The purpose of an inquest is to determine the cause and circumstances of a death. A coroner’s jury can make recommendations on how to prevent similar deaths in the future.
