Saskatoon city councillor Darren Hill will have stiff competition in his run for SUMA president.

Former Saskatchewan lieutenant-governor Gordon Barnhart is also vying for the Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association’s top position.

Barnhart, who worked as the University of Saskatchewan’s interim president from May 2014 to October 2015 after six years as the province’s lieutenant-governor, wrote in his bio on the SUMA website his experience meets all the requirements of a good president.

“We are entering an interesting era of tight financial times for all levels of government. We have to show government that our services are essential and that we are good stewards of public funds,” he wrote.

The former high school teacher and university professor was recently elected to council in his hometown Saltcoats, Sask.

He is semi-retired, according to his bio.

Hill, Saskatoon’s Ward 1 councillor since 2006, announced he was running in early January. He’s been on the SUMA board since 2007 and on Federation of Canadian Municipalities boards and committees since 2006, his SUMA bio reads.

Elections for president and two vice-president positions are set to take place Monday during SUMA’s 2017 convention in Saskatoon. Results are expected the same day.
