CTV News is declaring that Saskatchewan NDP Leader Cam Broten lost his seat in Monday night’s provincial election.
Saskatchewan Party candidate David Buckingham beat Broten by just 232 votes in the constituency of Saskatoon Westview. CTV News delayed declaring a winner to be certain of the results of the tight race.
The Sask. Party won 51 seats in Monday’s vote, while the NDP picked up the remaining 10.
In a statement, Broten said the overall results of the election are disappointing.
“Obviously this is not the result we hoped for,” Broten said. “Now I’m going to spend a couple of days with my family, speak with my colleagues, and consider how we move forward.”
He congratulated Brad Wall on winning a third consecutive term as premier.
Broten said it has been a great honour to serve as an MLA for eight years. He is the second straight NDP leader to lose his seat after Dwain Lingenfelter was defeated in the 2011 election.
