A proposed rule for the road could muzzle some Saskatoon motorists.

The city is looking at giving police the green light to listen for excessive noise on city streets, something which could mean fines for drivers with noisy vehicles.

On Monday, city council sitting as executive committee chose an option that would create the offence of operating any vehicle in such a manner to disturb the public.

Factors determining whether the noise is unreasonable will include time of day, duration of the sound, and the neighbourhood.

Specific provisions would set decibel limits that would see noise generated by motorcycles not allowed to exceed between 92 and 100 decibels.

The city says detailed studies of a similar system in Edmonton show charges do stand-up in court.

The bylaw could go to city council for a vote as soon as next month.

Also Monday, councillors got a look at a report that outlines the cost of implementing speed restrictions around playgrounds, in addition to the existing restrictions school zones. That issue will be discussed a future meeting.
