A number of staff members at St. Paul’s Hospital were evacuated on Friday night after a small chemical spill in the morgue.
The Saskatoon Fire Department received a call around 10:30 p.m. that a small quantity of formalin, a chemical used in the embalming process, had been spilled.
Staff were evacuated from the morgue and the door was locked.
The fire department’s hazardous materials team was dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, they found three litres of formalin spilled on the floor.
Crews used an absorbent material to clean up the chemical, then shut off a leaking valve, which was the source of the spill. They vented the area before turning it over to staff.
There were no injuries to hospital staff as a result of the spill.
