A Saskatoon police officer is in hospital after an altercation with a suspect wanted on an outstanding arrest warrant.

The 36-year-old constable was attempting to arrest the 48-year-old suspect just before noon Saturday at a home on the 100 block of Avenue I South. The suspect began to resist arrest, which led to a physical confrontation, police said in a media release.

The officer was able to take the man into custody, but suffered injuries to his chest and hand. The seven-year member of the Saskatoon police was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The suspect did not require medical attention. He was charged with obstruction and assaulting a police officer, and is also facing charges of breaching an existing conditional sentence.

He is set to appear before a justice of the peace Sunday.
