Saskatoon police are looking for a suspect after a stolen truck hit a cruiser on Sunday morning.
According to police, a canine unit member saw a truck reported as stolen near Massey Drive and 33rd Street West just before 8 a.m. The truck pulled into the parking lot of an apartment complex in the 3300 block of 33rd Street West. When the officer pulled up behind the truck, the driver reversed quickly and rammed into the cruiser, police said in a media release. The truck’s passenger fled on foot and the driver left in the truck. Another officer followed the truck, but the chase ended due to safety concerns.
The canine officer followed the truck’s passenger to a home in the 200 block of Bowman Crescent. Police believe the man stole a bicycle from the home. The officer followed bicycle tracks to a business at Wedge and George Roads. Police stopped a taxi leaving from that business and arrested the passenger. The 26-year-old man will face charges of possession of stolen property.
The stolen truck was found several blocks away about 25 minutes after the initial incident. A second canine unit tried to track the driver of the stolen vehicle, but police say they are still looking for the suspect.
According to police, another officer responding to the initial call was involved in a crash with another driver at the intersection of 33rd Street West and Confederation Drive. There were no injuries.
The canine officer and his dog were not injured. The investigation is ongoing.
