Midtown Plaza was evacuated Saturday after a car caught fire in the underground parking lot off of 20th Street.

It happened shortly after 5 p.m. Fire crews found heavy smoke near the mid-point of the parking garage and located a car with flames coming from the engine compartment.

The mall’s fire suppression system was functioning normally at the time and prevented the fire from spreading.

The blaze was brought under control within 20 minutes of the initial alarm.

Due to heavy smoke entering the parking garage and the shopping area of the mall, fire crews along with mall security helped people exit the mall safely.

Maintenance staff at Midtown Plaza used the mall’s ventilation system to clear the smoke from the parking garage and all areas of the shopping mall.

One of the mall’s security staff was assessed on scene for smoke inhalation, but there were no other injuries.

The cause of the fire and damage estimate are both under investigation.
