Crews are working hard to the last minute to get Saskatchewan’s parks as ready as possible for the May long weekend.

“They’ve been giving ‘er heavy,” Ray Edworthy, manager at Wakaw Lake Regional Park, said with a laugh.

Wakaw Lake is one of many parks that’s still running about three weeks behind schedule because of this year’s slow melt.

“There was snow here until not very long ago, but things are coming now and I just hope people have some patience with us,” Edworthy said.

The lake level is roughly 19 inches above normal, and the boat launch is under water. For now, the docks won’t be put in because of the high water level.

Some of the campsites are also a little dam, but pumps have cleared most of the water away.

Despite the water, Wakaw is staying afloat. Golfers might get their shoes a little wet, but the golf course is open.

“The leaves aren’t out yet on May long weekend. It’s a little wetter, but they’ve done a lot of work to the park in the last year years and it’s looking pretty good,” said Kevin Wist, an early May long camper.

While spring was slow to start, May long still marks the start of the camping season.
