University of Saskatchewan women’s volleyball coach Jason Grieve has been placed on leave after several complaints were made against him.

Huskie Athletics director Basil Hughton told media concerns were first brought forward in December before two more complaints were made in January.

“It was brought to our attention initially with an email in late December,” Hughton said. “Subsequent to that, there was an email on Jan. 13 and another email on Jan. 18.”

The complaints merited further investigation, Huskie Athletics wrote in a statement.

Hughton did not expand on the nature of the complaints, only stating the investigation is a private matter.

He’s not sure how many players are involved. “It’s very unclear to us. We don’t know,” he said.

The university’s human resources department is spearheading the investigation.

“We certainly don’t take any of this lightly, and at the bottom of this is the well-being of our student athletes,” said Hughton.

Grieve was hired at age 38 as the Huskies’ interim head coach in 2011. He earned the full-time position a year later.

Assistance coaches will take over the women’s volleyball squad during the investigation, the university said.
