The 70-year-old victim in a fatal crash on Circle Drive this week was driving a Volkswagen Beetle he’d finished restoring in honour of his late wife when the collision occurred.
The owner of Air Cooled Classics, Todd Penn, tells CTV News he sold the red Bug to the couple. The wife always dreamed about owning one of the cars, according to Penn.
When she died of a heart attack about a year ago, the husband chose to complete the project in her honour.
Penn did not want to name the man.
“If he didn’t have bad luck, he wouldn’t have any luck at all,” Penn said. “His health was deteriorating. He was hospitalized. That, and losing his wife. Now this.”
Police say the 70-year-old man died at the scene of the crash. His southbound Bug was hit by a northbound vehicle shortly before 1:30 p.m. after the northbound car struck a piece of construction equipment and crossed the median on Circle Drive near 108th Street, investigators believe.
Several Volkswagen Beetle enthusiasts in Saskatoon held a cruise Friday evening to honour the victim.
