Two people trapped in a burning vehicle Sunday night in Saskatoon can be thankful the people who stopped were well prepared.
The accident happened when a vehicle rolled on Circle Drive near College Drive. It caught fire, and trapped inside were the 20 year old male driver, and a 17 year old girl.
Brothers in law Mensur Foric and Iksad Deumic were driving by, and both carry fire extinguishers in their trucks.
Foric says he didn't think twice - he ran down toward the vehicle to fight the flames.
"It (the fire) was right underneath the hood," said Foric. "He was squished inside in the vehicle and I saw he was bleeding from the top of his head."
Foric said the fire was inching toward the driver, but the door was jammed shut.
Other people on scene were also yelling for another fire extinguisher, so Deumic threw down another one.
"He kept fighting the fire," said Deumic. "In the meantime there were other people trying to open the door. Luckily they opened the door and pulled the guy out."
The driver is suffering serious head injuries, according to Saskatoon Police. The girl was not seriously injured.
However, the fire extinguishers allowed rescuers enough time to get the victims out of the burning vehicle.
Safety officials say it's a good idea for everyone to have safety equipment in their vehicles.
"You can put in a small first aid kit," said Al Reichert with the Saskatoon District Safety Council. "A small fire extinguisher, a collapsible shovel. It doesn't take up a lot of room but you've got it when you need it."
Foric and Deumic say it was a case of good timing - and being prepared.
"You are born to help people," said Foric, "not turn your head around and let somebody else help."
