City councillors in Saskatoon say any prayers offered at civic events should ensure all cultures and religions are respected.
Council’s executive committee discussed during a lengthy meeting Monday the issue of prayers offered at civic gatherings.
One option suggested the city remain religiously neutral and not promote either a religious or a secular way of life at city events.
The second option -- the one which most councillors were in favour of -- would be an inclusive approach to recognize all cultures and religions.
The committee also looked at forgoing prayer at city events but that suggestion received no support.
The issue has been sent back to the city solicitor for further study.
The debate follows a human rights complaint about a prayer said at a City of Saskatoon event last year.
