A small explosion forced the shutdown of a plant just east of Saskatoon Thursday morning.

Emergency crews were called to the Richardson Pioneer terminal at about 11 a.m. after receiving reports about a fertilizer explosion.

Saskatoon Fire and Protective Services said there was a small explosion within the facility. However, it was contained to a very small area.

The plant was shut down but firefighters didn’t see any evidence of a fire followed the explosion.

Staff at the plant told fire crews they believed dust from a sulphur-based product ignited and damaged metal chutes. They said they’ve been using the product for years and have never had a problem before.

No one was injured in the explosion, and it’s unsure how much damage was done.
