A 20-year-old man accused of stealing a police car and fleeing after he was shot by a police Taser on Friday appeared in Saskatoon provincial court Monday to face a series of charges.

The man is charged with break and enter, four counts of assault with a weapon, uttering threats, mischief, possession of a weapon, theft over $5000, dangerous operation of vehicle, failing to stop for police, and obstruction of police.

It all started around 7 p.m. Friday when police were called to the Sutherland neighbourhood for a report that a man armed with a knife was threatening another man and a woman outside of a home in the 100 block of Powe Street.

Police say the suspect is also believed to have broken into a garage and a home and slashed the tires of a vehicle outside.

The man confronted officers near the patrol car when they arrived on scene, according to a police news release. A conducted energy weapon, or Taser, was used in an attempt to stop the man but he evaded officers and stole a patrol car.

A brief vehicle chase ensued before the man crashed the cruiser into a truck on College Drive, between Cumberland Avenue and Campus Drive. He attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended by police.

The suspect was taken to hospital as a precaution, while the driver of the truck was not injured. One officer, who was dragged a short distance while attempting to stop the man from stealing the patrol car, was also sent to hospital where he was treated and released.

Eastbound lanes on College Drive were closed for several hours as a collision analyst investigated the crash.
