An armed suspect who stole a police cruiser was captured Friday night after a brief police chase.

Police were called to the 100 block of Powe Street in Saskatoon’s Sutherland neighbourhood around 7 p.m. Friday. A man armed with a knife was reportedly causing a disturbance outside of a home.

The man immediately confronted officers when police arrived on scene, according to a Saskatoon Police Service media release.

A conducted energy weapon, or Taser, was deployed to stop him, but he evaded officers and stole the patrol car.

A chase ensued before the man crashed the cruiser into a truck on College Drive, between Cumberland Avenue and Campus Drive.

He attempted to flee on foot but was quickly apprehended by police.

He was taken to hospital as a precaution. The driver of the truck was not injured.

One officer, who was dragged a short distance attempting to stop the man from stealing the patrol car, was also sent to hospital. The officer was treated and released Friday night.

Eastbound lanes on College Drive were closed for several hours as a collision analyst investigated the crash.
