A 20-year-old man who admitted to killing a Saskatoon man and burning his body has been sentenced to nine years in prison.

Shelby Pinnell, from Saskatoon, pleaded guilty to manslaughter inside a Saskatoon courtroom Thursday in the death of Mervin McAdam.

McAdam’s body was found in a garbage bin in the back alley of Avenue S South in February 2012.

Pinnell was initially charged with second-degree murder. He was 18 and a member of the Terror Squad street gang when he committed the crimes.

His defence lawyer described him as "unwanted, unloved and brutalized viciously" throughout a childhood that saw him shuttled between 45 foster homes between the ages of six and 15.

A judge accepted a joint submission from the defence and the Crown for a nine-year prison term.

Pinnell will serve another six-and-a-half years to account for 30 months already spent in custody before trial.

Another man, Bobby Dean Hannah, is already serving 11 years for the slaying of McAdam and the burning of his body.
