A number of Saskatchewan highways are feeling the stress caused by the spring melt.

Already, the rising water has caused several highways to be closed. Highway 16 has been particularly hard-hit, with a portion near Maidstone being closed to traffic for more than 13 hours over the weekend. It was reopened at around 1:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Near the community of Denholm, the highway was partially washed out on Saturday night. According to residents, water from the ditch overflowed onto the highway, and reduced traffic to one lane. It has since receded from the road.

The cooler weather expected during the week may slow down the melt, according to the Water Security Agency, which is what drivers in the Denholm and Battlefords area say they’re hoping for.
