A wind warning has been issued for Regina and other areas of southern Saskatchewan.

Environment Canada says strong south winds ahead of an intense low-pressure system have developed over south-central and southeastern parts of the province late Wednesday morning.

Winds could peak in the 70 gusting to 90 kilometre an hour range during the late morning and early afternoon hours before diminishing slightly later in the afternoon.

“Damage to buildings, such as to roof shingles and windows, may occur,” the agency said. “Be prepared to adjust your driving with changing road conditions due to high winds.”

A special weather statement is also in effect for north and central parts of western Saskatchewan, with rain and thunderstorms expected over the next two days.

The heaviest rains are expected to be in the Meadow Lake, Ile a la Crosse and Cree Lake regions, where a total of 30 to 50 millimetres of rain is likely by the end of Thursday.

Local thunderstorms could potentially bring more than 75 mm of rain over the two-day period, Environment Canada said.

Strong northwesterly winds are expected to develop in the wake of the weather system Thursday. Areas near the Alberta border may see winds gusting to 80 km/h or higher.
