A Saskatchewan woman accused of animal neglect has dismissed her lawyer and is defending herself at trial.

Dolores LaPlante was charged in 2011 after the SPCA seized about 70 cats from an animal shelter she was operating out of her home in Elrose.

A veterinarian’s report found that several of the cats were sick or dehydrated and 20 of the animals needed immediate medical attention.

The veterinarian testified that one of the cats died in the home and had been partially eaten by the others. Court also heard that the cats didn’t have enough food and were living in their own feces.

Two more witnesses were scheduled to take the stand Tuesday.
