A man facing charges after two pedestrians were struck in a Walmart parking lot Friday was not supposed to be driving, according to Saskatoon police.

“The operator of the vehicle was disqualified from driving for medical reasons,” police said in a media release.

Officers were called to the Blairmore Walmart parking lot around 3:15 p.m. Friday. A vehicle struck a 68-year-old man and 40-year-old woman.

Police initially described the incident as a hit-and-run collision but later said the driver suffered a seizure, causing the vehicle to speed out of control, hit the pedestrians and eventually become hung up on a curb at the end of the parking lot.

Both pedestrians were sent to hospital with serious injuries. Police said Friday evening the man was in stable condition and the woman’s injuries were considered non-life-threatening.

The driver was charged with two counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm and was issued a ticket for driving while suspended.
