Posters advertising a turtle that was found near Broadway Avenue were put up after a woman spotted the creature walking outside of her apartment.

Rita McLeod and her friend made the usual discovery while walking in the Broadway area on Saturday.

“I really couldn't believe my eyes,” McLeod said. “I thought it was pretty odd. A turtle, in Saskatoon.”

The red-eared slider turtle is now safe in the care of the Saskatoon SPCA. The organization said the turtle is likely between four and five years old, and is thought to have been someone’s pet.

“He definitely got a second chance because he probably wouldn’t have survived outside very long,” said Cathy Brin, public relations coordinator at the Saskatoon SPCA. “We’re very grateful to animal lovers out in the community who pick up animals when they find them in situations they shouldn’t be in.”

The SPCA plans to make the turtle available for adoption in the coming days, unless its original owner comes forward with a claim.
