A downtown Saskatoon intersection was blocked by police for several hours Thursday and a bomb unit was called after a report of a suspicious package outside a Fourth Avenue building.

Officers received a call at about 1:15 p.m. Thursday from a business on the 300 block of Fourth Avenue North reporting that a suspicious package was outside the building.

Patrol officers set up a perimeter around the area and the police service’s explosive disposal unit was called to the scene.

Traffic was shut down on Fourth Avenue, between 24th and 25th Street, and on 24th Street, between Fourth and Fifth Avenue. Police began clearing the scene at about 4 p.m.

The public was asked to avoid the area as police investigated.
