A senior RCMP officer is investigating after a stabbing suspect was injured while being chased by Mounties on a north-central Saskatchewan First Nation.

Emergency crews were called to a stabbing on the Mistawasis First Nation late Saturday night. Two men were treated on scene by paramedics.

The suspect, a 20-year-old Saskatoon man, was detained and searched by RCMP officers after he was spotted walking on a back road on the First Nation, Mounties said in a media release.

He suffered non-life-threatening injuries after running from police.

“After the search, the suspect ran from police into a nearby field.  While being pursued by members, the suspect sustained what was described as a non-life-threatening injury,” RCMP said.

He was taken to Shellbrook Hospital for treatment and a senior RCMP officer was assigned to investigate the circumstances surrounding the suspect’s injury.

CTV News called an RCMP spokesperson for more details on what led to the injury, but she wouldn’t comment further.

The findings of the investigation will be reported to the province, and according to the RCMP, Mounties are also requesting the Ministry of Justice appoint an independent observer to examine the incident.

The stabbing investigation is also ongoing, police said. Charges are pending against the 20-year-old man in relation to the alleged stabbing.

Mistawasis First Nation is located about 70 kilometres west of Prince Albert.
