Fire investigators believe a house fire on Eighth Street over the weekend started near its smart meter, but the cause remains unclear.

The Saskatoon Fire Department is still looking into the cause of the late Saturday fire, at 528 Eighth Street, but says an investigator is looking into whether the flames started around the home’s smart meter.

The owner of the home tells CTV News the meter was recently installed and says a neighbour saw sparks coming from the area where the meter is located just before the fire.

The fire department said flames and smoke were coming from the back of the house when crews arrived.

No one was inside the home at the time. Damage was estimated at $150,000.

The property is part of Saskatoon Light and Power's jurisdiction. Saskatoon Light and Power uses a different brand of smart meters than SaskPower, which was ordered in 2014 to halt its smart-meter installation program in the wake of several fires.
