A Saskatoon company has been fined for an accident in which a worker's arm got caught in a metal shredder and had to be amputated above the elbow.

The Saskatchewan government says B.N. Steel and Metal pleaded guilty on Thursday to contravening occupational health and safety regulations.

They require an effective safeguard when a worker may come in contact with a dangerous moving part of a machine.

The accident happened July 1, 2015.

The company was fined $43,000, plus a surcharge of $17,200 in Saskatoon provincial court.

Two additional charges were stayed.
