Saskatoon’s airport was briefly evacuated Monday morning around 8:15 after fire alarms went off.

People could smell smoke coming out of the ventilation system.

It turns out the cause was an electrical motor that overheated.

Saskatoon Airport Authority CEO Bill Restall says the situation was handled smoothly.

“It worked exactly like it’s supposed to work. If a fire alarm goes off, people have certain functions in the building, security has certain functions, we clear the building. The first thing that’s paramount in our minds is the safety of the individual,” he said.

Restall says the evacuation lasted about 12 minutes.
