Prince Albert is bracing for a rush of water as the North Saskatchewan River flowing through the city is expected to crest Saturday.

The Saskatchewan Water Security Agency says the river, which was initially forecast to peak Thursday, is expected to rise 4.6 metres above the current level.

City manager Robert Cotterill says local officials don't anticipate homes will flood but are proceeding with a worst case scenario.

"It’s basically a three-day event, from peak back down to normal levels, so the critical time for us is basically a day.”

The city has taken precautionary measures as crews sandbagged catch basins and residents in certain areas along the river bank have been notified of what to do in the event of flooding. The city says water may back up into the storm sewer system in low-lying areas along the river.

Officials say the drinking water is secure at this point, but residents are being reminded to keep away from the fast-flowing river.
