A lack of increased funding in last week’s provincial budget is leading the Meewasin Valley Authority to close its interpretive centre in Saskatoon.
Meewasin officials announced the closure, planned for July 1, on Wednesday. A zero per cent increase in provincial funding, combined with inflation and additional maintenance required in Saskatoon, led to the decision, officials said.
“This budget has significant implications for Meewasin not only this year but for the future existence of the Meewasin Valley Authority,” MVA board chair Toddi Steelman said in a media release.
The closure of the interpretive centre, located in the lower level of the Meewasin building in downtown Saskatoon, will allow Meewasin to balance its 2016-17 budget.
Three employees will be laid off.
More than 400,000 people have visited the interpretive centre since it opened in 1988.
