Trick-or-treaters in Martensville might not want to eat the red ones last.
Police are now investigating allegations that someone in Martensville handed out boxes of Halloween candy with cat feces in them.
Eleven-year-old Shamus Sawatsky says when he opened up a box of Smarties after a night of trick-or-treating, he found cat feces inside.
“It was really disgusting,” he said.
“All of us agreed that this was cat feces and cat litter,” added his mother Kim Sawatsky.
Kim says there was cat feces in two different Smarties boxes her son opened.
"The thing that really got me is that these didn't look tampered with or anything,” she said of the boxes. “They weren't ripped, they weren't tapped back together. They really took their time and glued them back shut. You couldn't tell at all."
Kim posted pictures of the contents and the box on Facebook, and she called the police.
RCMP say they had a complaint from another Martensville parent who alleged to have found cat food in Halloween candy. They are currently investigating the incident.
“If somebody does that with the intentions of harming or causing a person to get sick, that can easily be pursued through a criminal investigation,” said Sgt. Craig Cleary.
Kim says Shamus only trick-or-treated in Martensville. She is talking to other Martensville parents and trying to figure out where the Smarties boxes came from.
“I want to find out who did this,” she said. “It’s not a joke. Someone could have been hurt.”
Shamus now says he will be very careful before he digs into his Halloween candy.
“I will check the box before I eat Smarties,” he said.
Police are asking parents to look through their children’s candy and report anything suspicious.
