A man has pleaded guilty to impaired driving causing death for his role in a collision that killed a 25-year-old Saskatchewan woman more than a year ago.

John Koch pleaded guilty Thursday in Saskatoon Provincial Court.

The 50-year-old was charged after the October 2014 crash killed Danille Kerpan, from Kenaston. RCMP say his pickup truck was driving on the wrong side of Highway 11, near Bladworth, when the truck collided head-on with Kerpan’s car.

Kerpan’s father and former Saskatchewan politican, Allan Kerpan, told media outside court he believes drunk driving is a problem in rural Saskatchewan and for his generation.

“We live in rural Saskatchewan and this incident happened in rural Saskatchewan, and I really see — and if you talk to police and you talk to people who live out there — it’s still a big problem,” he said.

“It's a lot of my age, my generation, who never had that opportunity to get that education and awareness programs.”

Koch is scheduled back in court Jan. 18 for sentencing.
