The Métis Nation in Saskatchewan officially declared its election Saturday, sending voters from across the province to the polls in May.

Some candidates stopped by the election office in Saskatoon’s Market Mall to hand in their nomination papers on Saturday morning. The Métis Nation is electing four executive positions and 12 regional positions.

An independent group will run this year’s election. Chief electoral officer Loretta Metzger expects all the positions to be highly contested and encourages everyone to come out and vote.

“That’s how you really have your say, that’s how you do your part for democracy and for the Métis Nation,” she said. “They really need to have a good showing and get an executive elected that will help them move forward.”

Nominations are being accepted until April 27 and election day is May 27. Voters can vote at the regional returning office or at advance polls in the region in which they currently live.
